Since there doesn't seem to be a generic "Software" forum, I thought I'd post this here :P
Has anyone had any sucess in getting VMWare Server downloaded and registered since it got released yesterday? I tried multiple times yesterday but I kept on getting a error when I tried to log in. Today I can't even get to the registration page.
I managed to download the program from one of VMWare's mirrors but its useless without the reg code

If I was looking at using something like vmware server or the m$ offering to use as a testbed rather than have lots of spare macines running real copies of the o/s what sort of machine is required, dual core 3ghz p4 2gb 160gb'ish hard drives ok or more required just priced a dell to that spec at £740 just wondering what sort of kit others are using.
Anyone running esx server instead and is that a better idea than running a host os first?

I bought a Viglen P4 3 GHz PC with 2Gb RAM and a 120Gb HDD specifically for doing VM stuff. I originally bought it with 1Gb but upgraded it about a year ago. I can happily run a server and 2 workstations, (3 VMs in total) each with 512Mb RAM. Obviously, depending on what each VM is doing, the performance varies, but I don't feel any need to upgrade at the moment. I use the VMs for software packaging and configuration testing.
I still use the Connectix release (5.2) of Virtual PC and am not thinking of changing to the MS version until VPC 2007 comes out so I can do some Vista testing.

For testing purposes I run XP @ 128 meg of ram and Server @ 256. I may give them more if it's available but it isnt really needed for basic testing.

Now I'm wondering wether to go for a server class machine or a really well specced desktop for this, it's only for testing and allowing my technician to play with AD without the danger of breaking the domain.

i would just use a workstation with plenty of ram. The money you save on getting a workstation rather than a server class machine can be used for the upgraded memory.

True but I specced the Dell above with 2gb ram and 2 x 160gb sata h/disks for £750.
