    Antivirus - your recommendations...

Our Sophos is coming up for renewal very soon and tbh I'm in 2 minds whether to stick or twist with it. Since the v7 upgrade it keeps shoving mahoosive updates down the line every few weeks (reinstalling most of the program) that's caused real headaches on our HDGuard (think Deepfreeze) protected teaching PCs.

The updates hog 100% CPU and only solution so far is to turn off the startup scan, a reg key that has to be reapplied after any updates as it gets overwritten

Had a company phone up pushing Kaspersky but I don't know anyone running it so need to have a good test there. Not that keen on Symantec either so what gets the thumbs up from you guys?

    Thumbs up Nod32

Can happily recommend Nod32 - just moved over after a lengthy trial. Low system overhead, good detection and a simple but pretty effective management console. Not perfect, but the closest thing I've found yet.

If you do look at Kaspersky, they do 3 and more year deals. So try and squeeze as much as you can.

    I have opted for a 3 year Trend Deal - 175 licences - around £2,500

Will be rolling it out during Easter - hopefully.....

BYE BYE SOPHOS - THANK GOD.....

gshaw im in the process of rolling out kaspersky. symantec was up for renewal this month but too pricey for us.
so far kaspersky rollout going ok. smaller footprint than symantec and more functionality ( tho sometimes more is not better!).
no complaints from me so far.

I use AVG at home but obvviously for larger environment need the central management etc. I heard about the new Symantec version weighing in at 900MB per client, which I found quite funny - no way I'd touch them lol.

May have to stick with Sophos for another year just as there's so little time now to make any radical changes but that year fills me with dread of more updates from 7.1 to 7.1.whatevernumberwefeelliketoday

I must be the only one who wishes I could have Symantec back... Sophos *GRRRR*
Have run everything from 8 to 10.2, never had a problem with it. 10 onwards was resource hungry but it just worked...

Already do that with HDguard on there, Sophos jus makes it 10x worse

Just seems to me like they rushed the V7 out, bodged it then keep changing the program hoping it's gonna work, it's been on 7.1.0 for a few weeks - anyone wanna take bets on what version number next and when it comes out :P

So get the networked version, we have the network version of AVG anti-malware with central management console it's really good, much better than the symantec that it replaced.

900MB? You've got to be kidding! How could you possibly push that out across any network?

Isn’t Sophos now free to schools ?
Do you have any press releases from Sophos confirming this? I know they discount schools a lot already, but giving it away free wouldn't make business sense! If your school is part of Birmingham however, they have an agreement with Sophos which covers all schools.

I've never understood why other LA's around the country don't adopt the same policy. Choose an AV supplier and buy an agreement with them. Save schools thousands.

That was basically what the article I read was saying, can't remember where I saw saw it now tho...

Edit: found it! A letter in PC Pro complaining about Symantec EndPoint protection, client install size 940MB!!! Luckily for current users they still sell \ support Corporate Edition for users "whose priority is minimum system resource utilisation"
