    Backup HELP!!!

Hi i was just checking my backups and it isnt doing the SIMS SQL database for some reason?!? Thank god i take a manual backup everyday!

Anyways when i go and edit the job and tick the 'SQL2005 SIMS' item in the job properties it gives me an error message. I have tried stopping the SQL service on the server it is backing up from but that wasnt it.

Any ideas? I have also tried creating a new job and it does the same thing.

Some backup software can't backup a live SQL Db do you have an agent for this, It should be backing up the zipped backups in the backups folder though.

What backup software are you using?

It has the old SIMS SQL selected but it wont let me tick SIMS 2005.

    Using Symantec Backup Exec 10d.

I think the approved of backup method for SQL server is to make a SQL backup job that runs before you main backup and dumps to .bak files or similar which can then be backed up as apposed to trying to backup the .mdf or .ldf files as you probably won't be able to get a handle on these as they are constantly in use.

    Cheers

Without an agent i don't think 10d will get a clean backup of the Db so you would normally restore from the zipped .bak files anyway this is the supported SIMS method.

Have you recently performed a migration and ended up with multiple SQL instances?

We issue a 'net stop simssql2005' command before the backup then a 'net start' after the backup. Works for us.

This is good but i cant add it to the the backup so it would be pointless untill i can get this box ticked.

Are you not using Dbattach.exe to run a backup each night then?

not that i am aware of as our lea take the sims upgrades and then 'modify' them and send us a link to an automated file and it does it all itself - scary but it works.

If it is you'll have a scheduled task that runs a .bat file each night and lots of .zip files in a folder called 'backup' in your SQL instance folder same folder level as the data folder.

    Fixed!!!

It was in the document that strawberry linked to, what it was is that you had to run an update on the remote server as well as the server file was found at "c:\program files\veritas\backup execv\nt\agents\rant32\raws.msp" for future information! It was listed in the middle of a paragraph and not made clearly visible they should put it in bold or underline it or something to make it stand out more!!

Thanks everyone for your help ;-)
