I ended up giving in on getting it to work on our main wireless system. As the system is only for use in 1 or 2 offices I brought a NetGear AP, ProSafe WG102. Works like a charm now.
After all my investigations with wireshark I never managed to understand why it failed.

Well, a genius from Prague has found a solution, at least to the Belkin pre-N router issue.
I have pursued this to the end with Belkin. They were adamant there was absolutely nothing wrong with their router, must all be HP's fault etc, etc. I gave evidence that the Loox 720 model had the same problem - you guessed it Belkin said it must be a HP and Fujitsu problem, nothing wrong with Belkin. So finally I asked them, if the Belkin isn't bust, how come this guy in Prague managed to fix it?! You guessed it, they are not interested, no goodwill gesture, just an unbending belief that Belkin is Best.
