My ICT coordinator has bought himself a tablet pc which has the tablet version of XP on it, with SP1. He has tried to put SP2 on it but it downloads OK but will go no further. Does he need a special version of SP2 and if so, where does he get it?
Thanks

21st January 2008, 01:14 PM #2 No he doesn't. The standard SP2 exe will work just fine. Assuming his tablet has sufficient ram and disk space to complete the upgrade (which might be why it's not working atm).

I'm guessing this is second hand, as a new Tablet PC would have SP2 (or Vista) on it already. If you can't get SP2 to install via Windows Update, try downloading the standalone package and running that. Make sure you're logged in with administrator rights.
If you have a Microsoft Schools Agreement or similar, you'll probably find you have a separate Windows XP Tablet PC Edition CD - should be green with gold bits on. That should include SP2.

21st January 2008, 01:34 PM #4 Apparently he went and bought the SP2 disk (I've got one but he didn't ask me) and that doesn't work either
So...is it likely to be the RAM and disk space then?

It's just Windows XP with added pen-input. Should run fine on 256MB RAM, pretty much any harddrive. Are you getting some kind of error message when you try to do whatever it is you're trying to do? Can you boot the tablet PC off the Tablet PC (SP2) install CD, wipe the harddrive and re-install from scratch?

Are we sure this an actual Tablet PC, not a PDA running Windows CE? If the above is true (and it's an XP machine), I'd say a wipe-and-reinstall is the best thing (probably swap harddrives so you have the old one there (with all the proper drivers on) just in case).
