My quick fix seems to have worked - no hitches printing over the last week.

So to summarise, I re-installed the printer using standard tcp/ip port and then did a browse for the drivers.

Disabled bi-directional (don't know whether important or not - I'll change it back in a month and see what happens)

Unshrared the old setup - re-used the same share name on the new setup.

Left the workstations previously setup alone (hopefully saved myself a bit of a job there )

If it lasts another week - I'll call it a result

    regards

    Simon

There was a time just before xmas where a load of dodgy drivers made their way out of HP - caused a few spooler service crashes due to conflicts. There is also some strange pre-requisit for HP Universal 6 with some drivers which I have recently found - like the new HP 1320 driver. Wierd...

Ended up tracking down a load of the older drivers for my printers in the ftp site.
That confirms my suspicions then! We upgraded our old printer server around that time and the new servers (ver 61.xx) caused all sorts of problems, especially the 2420 and 4600 ones. After looks of cleanspl'ing and rolling the drivers back we got back to normal but I couldn't believe how bad those drivers were

Going from the HP printer port to a standard one cleared up all our previous issues with these printers. Good stuff!
