    WSUS 3.0 Snap-in error

I'm having a problem with WSUS3.0. When opening the console i get "An unexpected error occurred in the WSUS snap-in. The snap-in will be unloaded". There are Two buttons under this error that say "Unload WSUS Snap-in" which just seems to freeze the screen with the egg timer icon and "Copy Error to Clipboard" which produces the error:

The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,

Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

I've googled around and found another with this issue but the only resolution so far has been to restore the HKLM hive which i don't fancy doing on a server unless you can restore individual sections of the registry from a backup image!!? Not something i've had to do before so not sure if it can be done

Has anyone else seen this issue and managed to fix it?

Yes i have. This has been working fine for a long time now so is not a case of a new installation.

    Re: WSUS 3.0 Snap-in error

I had a similar problem to this recently (I had this and other error messages as I attempted to fix WSUS).

I tried re-installing and all sorts but it just wouldn't work. In the end I had to move WSUS to a different server where it now works perfectly again.
