RISO Copier - Slow crashing print spooler on CC3/CC4 network

Our new Riso Printer is constantly crashing the print spooler on Server 2003r2, so far a temporary fix has been to run a scheduled task every 30 minutes to restart the service. RISO have been very unhelpful (It's all our fault etc....) and can't offer any workable solutions to fix it. Surely a new machine should not fail repeatedly like this...

Any body had similar issues or found a better fix?

It's running 32bit and 64bit drivers for XP and 7 seems to struggle with larger word and excel files.

Do you have a 2008/2012 server you can make a print server ? We have the 7150 and 3110 running with no issues using the latest drivers from their site on windows 2008r2 server.

Could you try making a windows 7 machine a print server ? even your own machine for testing purpose to see if it is server issue or copier .

Crap drivers are almost universal for printers, the only way we fixed the same issue with a stack of brother printers was by binning the lot. We had the same 30 min reboot of the spooler as otherwise it ate the non-paged pool memory till it took the server down.

This is why I try to insist on trials before purchasing printers, unfortunately this only works some of the time. Thank your lucky stars you don't have Toshiba copiers... Those are demon spawn. See if you can refund the printer as not fit for purpose and if not make sure you convey to the staff that are effected that it is brand x at fault rather than you so they can at least reap the brand loyalty they deserve.

Are you using PCL or postscript drivers? If the device support postscript, can you use a PPD with the standard MS PS driver, even if just to test? Also, kind of asking the obvious, but have you checked disk space on the spool folder drive?

I have had a truly horrible couple of Ricoh drivers also, no manufacturer seems immune unfourtunatly. By far the worst for me have been Brother, Toshiba and Minolta.

Using a generic driver if you can is a good option, or switching to the PS or PCL or universal if they offer them to see if they behave better. Later versions of Windows Server have driver isolation so this can help massively. Any chance of spinning up a little 2k8 or above virtual print server to deal with them?

Do you have RM's Printer Credits enabled? Try disabiling it (Open RMMC and r-click on your site code at the root of the tree in the left hand pane, properties, printercredits). It has been know to be a bit tempromental.

Have you tried disabling advanced printer features if they are on ?
