    Ultrium 1 / 3 questions on Veritas 9.1

We are currently running Veritas 9.1 on a single HP Ultrium 1 drive.
I have 2 Domain Controllers and a single member server. As the tapes only hold 200 gig [ compressed ] I am now witnessing full backups in which there are only a few gig left on the tapes.
I do the normal clear out of files etc and my images for clients are all held on NAS boxes along with a few other things.
My question is I want to persude my NM to purchase a Ultrium 3 drive - anyone had any problems with Veritas 9.1 on a Ultrium drive 3 drive and I take it our old Ultrium 1 tapes are compatable with the Ultrium 3 drive just in case I need to pull some data off them ?

Been doing some looking and it seems the Ult 3 drives [ the HP ones I have looked at ] won't read Ult 1 tapes - which is a bit of a bummer.
Anyone using a Ult 3 drive which can ?

Here's a link to a quantum LTO 3 drive on the pcwb site, this particular drive appears to be able to read from LTO 1's and R/W from LTO 2's.

Whenever i need to compare product specs i always go to pcwb, the most extensive range of hardware (with prices) available IMO.

As I have both drives mentioend above I can confirm that LTO3 drives will READ all LTO1 tapes but won't write to them, my drives are both HP Drives.

Thanks John & torledo - what backup software are you using just out of interest ?
I don't really want to update to another version of Veritas, I am hoping 9.1 will do.......

We're using Veritas 11 with a HP autoloader (LTO2 drive), i think with 9.1 you'll be fine with LTO-3 and anyway updated drivers should be available if you're using a newer drive.

There is better backup software available than BE, although BE is perfectly fine considering i've noticed a lot of people on here are using NTBakup 8O

Thanks, I am not a fan of BE at all - I think its shoddy compared to stuff I have used before - ADSM & TSM in the industry sector.
Anything is better than NTBackup I suppose - I do use NTBackup though - just to take system state snapshots and save them to a NAS device on our network - gives me peace of mind just incase I need to revert to one quickly.....

TSM is a great product, albeit expensive and a million purchasing options to bamboozle you. I gave up trying to get a quote because the ibm resellers kept asking me questions when all i wanted was a starting price!!! We're looking at Veritas NBU at the moment because it's a lot more straightforward to order, albeit pricey compared with BE.
With NBU the advantage is you can also integrate standard BE clients in you're backup environment.

As you said TSM is an industry product. Forgive my ignorance, but what is ADSM ? Never heard of that.

ADSM was again a backup system I used before it was intergrated with TSM.

Bare metal re-builds using ADSM on LAN and WARP servers - hubba hubba - taking me back.....
I miss working in industry sometimes.
