haha, keep an eye out after 3:15 ill get a picture of the classroom style setup, you'll have to excuse the mess though as we did have them clipped flat onto the center parting in the cupboards but it failed dismally

right here you go, this is how our IT rooms are layed out in the new building, i forgot to take the key with me though so you'll have to just imagin that picture of the board inside this cupboard

    the room:

    the cupboard:

works quite well, but i had a chat to my manager about sorting some switches out to turn all the machines off in them, going to try and swindle it to come out the main school budget seeing as it saves on there electric bill rather than coming out of our budget :P

    Use wake on lan.

I use wol.exe in a batch file, I used to angry IP scanner to gather a list of all the PCs mac addresses.

You could set the script up on a server and use sheduled tasks to run it at lesson changes.

@mrbios - That's the craziest setup I have seen in a long time. Did someone forget to budget for computer cases? You can buy even a cheap one for £15.

And I have to agree with previous comments. Excluding servers, leaving workstations on 24/7 really is a waste of electricity.

Out of curiosity, if a computer ever does get switched off, how do you turn the PC back on? If it doesn't support WoL your only option is to short the two motherboard pins with a screw driver? Unless you have a small switch inside?

At the schools I support, workstations are scheduled to shutdown at 6pm every evening. I don't worry about switching them back on in the morning, as teachers/pupils can do so when they're required.

    Re: intermitant logon issue

we've made our own switches, in the 2 older rooms there all wired back to a box with all the power swithes in (like a money box with a lock and the back cut out then attached to the wall)

and in the new building as seen in the picture they just have switches inside the box

this wasnt my idea by the way, personally i both hate and like this way of doing it but we've always had a problem of kids pulling off drive bay covers, breaking power switches/reset switches, turning pcs on and off constantly, pulling cables out the back and so on when we have rooms with PCs in - fixes all those issues, only thing the kids can break like this are the keyboards/mice/monitors each of which is very easy to spot, so it does make life much easier

all the teacher machines are still in cases, this is an IT classroom only thing, ill look into setting up WOL, never bothered to use it before, not sure why actually as its a damn good idea especially for how our pcs are setup

EDIT: oh and the other thing it solves is kids who turn other kids pcs off while there working, this way they cant, which is especially good as our backups dont work properly at the moment :P

I like your set up, students (sometimes even staff) messing with PCs really bugged me where I used to work. Luckily it's a little more orderly where I am now (Girls Grammer School).

If I get time on Monday I'll document how I implemented shutdown and wake up scripts here.

This is my notes for the wake up script I use. I hope it makes sense.
