I'll keep it short
We need to install Office 2007 onto a machine running Office 2003. Simple.
Problem.
We need to install 2003 AFTER 2007 due to a complicated issue
Any hints or tips?

it wont install 2 versions of outlook and word will reinstall everytime u load it, no matter which version.
I am going to need to do this soon as we will need to support XP/Office 2003, XP/Office 2007 and (God help us!) Vista/Office 2007 machines.
I was advised to use something called "Virtual PC".
you can save 2007 docs as 2003 compatible
it is a very bad idea for the simple reason if you uninstall one of them at a later date you will have to reinstall the other cause certain files are used by both and when u uninstall one the files are removed and as mentioned by strawberry the compatibility issues between outlook 03 and 07 are widely known
We have both versions on some computers - but not Outlook as they all use Web Access anyway.
The only problem we have is that you'll have to wait for the First Run screens everytime you swap from one to the other.
It's pretty essential for converting to PDF as it works better than ANY PDF Printer and even better than Adobe Acrobat.

Even better, download the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack it's free and works with Office 2000, 2002 (XP) and 2003. It allows you to Open, Save and Edit files in 2007 formats and traditional formats.you can save 2007 docs as 2003 compatible
I've tested it on a few machines and it works great! Highly recommended!

Virtual PC?

DO NOT DO IT!
Even Microsoft do not recommend it and the only supported method is installing 2007 after 2003.
YES, it is possible and it works to a degree installing it in any other way however the increased support issues you are likely to encounter negate any benefits of having a dual install.
As posted use the compatability pack on the earlier releases and 2007 exclusively on any Vista machines.
I have been there seen it and done it and can honestly say it wasn't worth it!
If you use sharepoint it's even more of a nightmare!
Both versions install Sharepoint Common Controls that are not compatible with each other.
Anyone who say's they have done it and it works perfectly is a liar, they might have done it and it works for them! As soon as another user logs in your problems start all over again.
You simply can't resolve the differences enough to satisfy the diverse usage patterns we see in a campus environment.
Here is just one of the many reg hacks to resolve a few of these issues.

I know of one school that ended up dual booting an entire lab so that they can use both versions of office properly.
I suppose if your over staffed and have nothing better to do!
we are rolling out office 2007 across the school and laptops this January. should be fun![]()

Fine, no problem but watch out!Originally Posted by MrHappy
There are some 3rd party applications that invoke word and other office applications that can only use earlier versions of office!
Some of these are part of the 2007/8 examinations activity if you break these you will be in trouble with your teaching staff!
Make sure that all of your other applications are going to continue to work properly after this upgrade or you will be in big trouble!
Get the SMT to test and approve your plan well in advance and test it thoroughly that way it will not be your balls in the vice!
!

You will have no-end of compatibility issues doing this.
I would suggest using a terminal server and something like 2X Application Server and share the older version from the server.

The prime problem I can see installing two Office versions, is which version takes priority on the file extensions? Stick with one version and the compatibility pack.
And speaking of Office 2007, wait until the 11th December '07. SP1 for Office 2007 is being released early. I'm guessing you can still slipstream service packs, but will probably require different commands no doubt. Creating an Admin install uses different run commands/switches.
Its ok it was the ICT coordinator's idea to have office 2007 installed across the newtwork, despite me saying its not a good idea yet and that we should wait. But hey at least I can point the fingure at her and say told you so when/if it goes wrongOriginally Posted by m25man
