ICT Technician - Interview + Practical test

    Hi Guys,

I have an interview + practical test coming up soon for another establishment (not necessarily within education), I have trawled through this forum and google to try and find out what kind of tasks they are likely to set. You guys have any ideas? or tips?

I've been working as an ICT tech for just over 2 years now, just want to try and be prepared for anything I guess!

Have any of you guys been on the panel when interviewing for a similar role? What questions have you asked / answered?

The job involves working with windows server, AD, windows 7 & windows office.

So far a lot of people have mentioned:
    Anything related to PRINTERS!
Re-connecting a disabled computer from scratch
Common errors such as - Trust relationship, no logon server.
    Group Policy

    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers

Mine consisted of what would you do in the case of...

    Virus outbreaks on the machines
    printer jams
    toner explosion
monitor not switching on but everything shows it should be (fuse/cable)
    wifi down

    it could be anything.

They will try and basically try and see how you deal with technical issues and see your method of how to resolve them issue in other words best practices really

Mine was all active directory based, i.e. create a GPO to do x, create user account y, create and share said folder, create a script to do b, all real basic things.

Don't think too hard on any test, go for the most basic option.

The last time I had to do a practical test was all AD related also.

I also had a machine where they had planted an network issue and they watched what process I went through to troubleshoot.

The longest test for a position I had was troubleshooting a none booting PC, a laptop which had the wifi deactivated in the BIOS that they didn't tell you had to be booted then joined to the test domain, then create a user account for it and login. A 20 question sheet on general stuff like what service would be used to do task X, what does TCP/IP stand for, how would you change a DHCP scope, a list of users and reported problems such as head printer jam, teacher projector broke, student password reset and priorities them with reasoning. Unfortunately I didn't get the role but I did get brilliant feedback and 2nd place from about 7 candidates, the guy who got the role had previously worked at that school and then went onto a NW managers role elsewhere before returning.

Another interview I had was with a local LEA Tech team which involved performing about 10 tasks on an RM network, having never looked at or touched RM stuff before It was so simple for the given tasks I ended up getting the job...ended up turning it down just before I was due to start for my current role tho!

    Hi guys,

thought I would update you as to what I did get tested on / questions I was asked.

A test consisted of: A broken PC (HDD unplugged, Ram slightly out of ram slot)
I was asked to make the PC work and boot. After plugging everything in, was presented with no boot mgr.
Had to set up dual screen
windows looked upside down when loaded
    NIC was disabled.
Had to make one screen priority and make office open on the other screen (and make sure it continues to open on that screen).
    Also had questions on RAID
how to test a server was online from CMD.
how to get the ip configuration and DNS info from CMD.

    Interview questions consisted of:
If a user phoned in, saying a printer wasnt working what would you do / say?
Which type of person do you feel you do not get along with / find it hard to work with?
How would you implement PC upgrades?
Asked random questions about my application.

Overal not such a bad test, interview was more nerve racking but it was OK.

Was offered the job on Monday
