SMTP Service (Exchange Server) will not stop

    Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Enterprise
    Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2

Whenever it is necessary for the 'Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)' Service to stop it never completes the operationg. ie the state changes to 'Stopping' but that's as far as it gets.

The only way to get it back again is to reboot ther server.

This is becoming increasingly annoying now I've configured the IMF as whenever that tries to update (which I would like to do) I run into the problem and end up having to reboot - killing the pdate process anyway.

I've searched around Microsoft and Google with no luck and there doesn't seem to be anything in the Event Viewer Logs either.

    Please help.

well.. if it wont stop then who are you to argue with it!?

Seriously though.. I've had this a few times but with the exchange system attendant (whoever he is) and performance logs. Are you using norton?Seems to be something to do with Norton AV and exchange not liking each other. Ive rebuilt the entire server god knows how many times but still no cheese.

This is just one of the reasons I'm moving away from Exchange next year.

This problem is really irritating now. I've not being able to install an IMF update for months.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

The only place I've seen that might have an answer is Experts-Exchange but I don't have an account...

Is it also a domain controller?

Exchange + DC is not a good idea either.

    Yeh I'm afraid it is.

I've read it's not a great idea for it to do both but never had any problems other than this one.

I have other DCs would it be a problem if I removed the role?

Actually I've just had a search on the Internet and found if I remove the DC role then Exchange will break. My onl yoptio nis to Uninstall Exchange, Remove the DC Role, Reinstall Exchange.

Think I'll leave it as it is!
