    laptop burning audio cds problem

I updated some stuff a few weeks ago on my gf's laptop and recently its stopped burning audio cds correctly. naturally the finger points at me. Im in trouble. We've tried everything I can think of to no avail. it seems to be something underlying. its a compaq r3000 intel laptop

    the problem:
mp3 > audio cds burn without errors but they dont playback properly. choppy sound on the laptop and dont work at all in a stereo. Worked fine a few months ago.

this happened with both nero and windows media. mp3 data works fine.

    tried: (in no particular order)
    uninstalled nero 7
    reinstall windows media 11
    reinstall k-lite codec pack
removed wireless drivers I installed b4
    reinstalled sound drivers
    updated cdrw firmware
    tried different cd-rs
    checked DMA on IDE controllers

cant remember anything else....anyone got any other ideas I can try?

    thx

Don't think it'll help but you could try installing the nero burning rights patch. Doesn't fit with problem though.

might be a bit obvious, but are you using the same CDs? have used some that just wont play in stereos, buying a different brand worked fine.

Could also be hardware related and not software. How are other CD's when they are used in the laptop? No problems accessing the CD Drive?

Adaptec ASPI drivers may need re installing or updating ?

    http://www.download.com/3000-2098-10219041.html

Also have you got any other burning software installed that may conflict ?

What exact version of nero are you using now compared to before ?

Have you got any error messages in your event viewer relating to burning cds. ( control panel --> admin tools --> event viewer )

If you do then post back with any relevant errors that or post your event viewer logs by right clicking on each section and going to save as log file. if you can find specific error messages then right click on those and save them specifically.

If they are all the same then you only need to do that for each type of error ie by checking the event id of the error, if you have 20 errors all with event id 73 for example then there is no point in repeatdly posting them.

I made that event id up btw

thats a thought. aspi. we uninstalled nero v7 and didnt put it back on but it still kept happening in media player. I havent been able to look at event viewer cos I havent had direct access to the laptop yet. no other burning software.

another thought to check if bought audio cds work or not.
also try disabling imapi xp burning service

Re: laptop burning audio cds problem

possibly updating the motherboard drivers more specifically the IDE drivers for the motherboard ?

Have you got more then one cd rw drive / dvd rw drive on the laptop ?

Also you could try and ( If this is a modular bay drive ) shut down the laptop and remove it and re insert it and make sure its seated firmly and the jumper settings are correct ( which I am guessing they will be since I am guessing that was not changed )

Also checking in device manager to see if there is anything wrong with the cd rw or dvd rw drive ie conflicts or IRQ conflicts ( Prolly not this ) but just making sure covering all bases.

If you do get the event viewer logs , let us know if you find any related errors to burning or the drive etc and if you do find any like i said before post back with the Event ID and the error description

Re: laptop burning audio cds problem

If that does not work as a very last resort you could try and remove the upper and lower filters for the cd rw / dvd rw drive and reboot the machine :

BTW found this regarding installation of ASPI:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm

Just a thought, WMP is not a great tool for burning anyways. I am suggesting that you use deep burn or cd burner xp or an earlier version of Nero ie the latest version of Nero 6.
