We are trying to roll out Visual Studio 6 on some XP SP2 computers while it is nice and quiet.
Anyway the problem is Visual Studio will install then throw up an error about being unable to register a certain .dll file in the registry (Something java related, I would post the exact error but I'm having my lunch!) and from reading around it seems that the Microsoft Java VM needs installing.
But every time the MS Java VM installation is run (We have a copy of the setup on our shared area) it just says 'Installation complete' without actually installing the thing.
Tried installing Visual Studio 6 on a 'basic' XP SP2 virtual machine image and it works fine as it prompts to update the Microsoft VM itself before the installation even begins!
Don't really want to have to do a fresh install of the computers in question as they have a LOT of specialist media software etc.

Try running the Process Monitor tool while installing:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...ssmonitor.mspx
It should be able tell you what's going on behind the scenes, and perhaps help you find a solution.

Sorted - Had to use a Microsoft utility to kill all traces of the VM, then setup prompted me to run the VM installer.
Phew! 5 hours of my day gone...
