Having spent the last week doing this, just a warning it doesn't always go to plan!
Are you upgrading on the same server? If so it will make things much easier.
Make sure you have plenty of free disk space.
You need to have upgraded to the August release or later.
This will then give you access to the migration utilities via SOLUS - if your support provider has enabled them.
Something I've had a fair bit of trouble with is the new trusted logins - if a user exists in SIMS that you have removed from your AD, it will kick up a fuss. Make sure SIMS trusted logins have a corresponding AD account.
So you've done the most important step, make a backup.
Next step, make another :-)
A copy of the capita migration guide is here
Next stop is Support Net KB71936 - How do you install SQL 2005
Once you have installed SQL 2005, you can move on to the next step.
Don't skip creating an instance - otherwise you be given a crappy default one.
Run the migration software - this will create extra files in your sims\setups folder.
Then it should just be a case of following through the wizard - skipping the SQL express install.
If anything fails it should roll back automatically.
If you're migrating to another server, welcome to my personal hell for the last week. Just finished the upgrade today. Several virtual PC trials and test runs and a brand spanking new sims server all up and running :-)

Remember to install a new instance of 2005 server, do NOT upgrade the 2000 one.

I'm doing my SQL 2005 install & Sims.Net migration on Monday. Aint looking forward to it.
It doesn't help that our Sims support at the LEA don't provide support during the holidays........ :-(

Grommit, as you are in Somerset, don't you follow the centralised way of managing SIMS? Ie the somerset build? If you do, SCC have said they will be releasing information shortly on how to do it smoothly...

Ah, that makes sense then... Was wondering, as not many schools down here break free from the SCC and go it alone!

650 is steep for the licence. I believe ours was 425 per CPU.

Ours was priced by county. They are usually the same as Ramesys and the like though.
