    Last Nights Windows Updates!

    Sad as I am,

I was working late last night, I have a laptop with a dodgy powersupply so I'm very careful when I shut it down.
It was off I know it was I selected shutdown watched it turn off and disconnected the supply myself.

At 03:00 hrs I saw the optical mouse light up and the CD drive spin up!

I opened the lid to see the on screen message say "Configuring Updates".

So Bill's boys have managed to forcibly install windows updates and wake my sleeping machine at 3:00 am to install them.

Then I get my first support call from a client at 07:30am saying that her server was not responding and that there were error messages and the RDP & VPN doesn't work anymore! A restart fixed it but the logs also recorded the 03:00 Windows update!
I have had 3 similar reports this morning that all relate to the 3:00 am update and the AV software is very unhappy about this activity!

All seems well enough so far after restarting, has anybody else seen unusual behaviour this morning?

Nothing here but then again I have pretty much all automatic updates turned off. More so for our Dell laptops where leaving windows updates on causes the CPU to spike at 90 to 100% which in turn makes the laptop very sluggish to use.

Nothing as yet this morning, but I did hear about MS covertly updating windows update files and other things without user knowledge a while back.

We did also run an update on one server and after reboot it had uninstalled DNS and DHCP. Reinstalled and all settings were still there, so dog knows why it decided to just remove them

waiting for morning break here, to restart server. Its upset our backup.

tried to logon to the server this morning but it got stuck on the blue screen, so i terminated explorer.exe and restarted explorer.exe again. what update was it?

The server is not configured to auto install MS updates, will have a look later.

I did notice that one of my admin servers (which uses Windows Update rather than WSUS) had installed updates and rebooted overnight... I thought that was odd!

Well there was some kerfuffle about this last month:

    http://windowssecrets.com/2007/09/13...-users-consent

    and MS posted a response:

    http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/...p-to-date.aspx

I've not seen any complaints about the same thing happening with this months updates, other than this thread, so maybe check your settings?

Two of our computers some how had windows updates enabled and the updated program download and installed half way though the lesson. Unlike normal there was no reboot later option. Pretty disruptive having your computer reboot half way though a lesson.

No problems here so far as we're using WSUS, and have group policies set so that they don't automatically reboot. Also they don't check for updates until lunchtime to cause minimum disruption.

2 of our admin servers which update directly from microsoft had crashed last night around 3am the only 2 servers which were offline this morning were the only 2 that update directly from microsoft.

    Pottsey,

I found the solution to your problem about 6 moths ago.... We have had the same problem with Dell Laptops. This is what we sent to staff. It fixed the problem....

    Hello All,

If you have a Dell Laptop, please read on, otherwise you can ignore this message.
We have been experiencing problems with many Dell Laptops with them slowing down due to the Windows Server Update Service. We have tried a solution on a Dell laptop and it seems to have worked successfully.

If you wish to try to overcome this problem, please try the instructions found at: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1071

You may all need to use the x86 version. If it states that the update agent is installed look at the added instructions
on the second quote where is talks about adding " /wuforce".

    Then continue and install
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

You'll want to reboot after this.

    Thanks.

    Robert

    Re: Last Nights Windows Updates!

Just as a note... the updates last night killed my sharepoint server with DCOM errors coming out all over the shop.

TBH I only have sharepoint on my home box for testing and learning purposes so with all the hassles I've pulled it off but the ID I was getting was 10016.

No idea what the cause was but thought I'd proffer a heads up just in case anyone hadn't noticed and needed to.

HA HA HA - manager bullsh1t language: [ Nate Clinton ]

...most customers choose to automate the updating experience.

An experience ? More like a pain the arse - just created a fresh image for two new Viglen PCs and updated them on using our WSUS server - 89 bleeding updates - [ and thats NOT including the office ones ]
    Experience - my arse.
