to get round this i have found if you do the fllowing.
1. plug the usb drive in to the machine
2. make your way to device manager\ universal bus controllers
3. uninstall mass storage devices driver
4. unplug the usb drive
5. restart the machine
6. plug the usb drive back in to the machine.
you should then be able to pick up the usb drive on a new driver letter.
I've found if you go to right click my computer for computer management and change the drive letter for the usb drive you have to do the same for all usb drives.
from what i understand each usb drive device has its own unique serial number and that plays a majour part.
thats my opinion but would be intrested to hear everyone else views on my suggestion.

we have some computers where a simple change of jumper on the motherboard disables the front usb and enabled the back. why both cant be on i dont know. but removing the jumper let allowed the front to work.
