    how? ops:
as per Geoffs post, the firewall should only allow access to the internet from the proxy server - this forces users to go through the proxy no matter what browser they use.

Why not just use software restriction policy to block execution of files from external sticks and there my docs etc.
Have a search on the forum, pretty sure there is lots of info on the subject.

As for the firewall/proxy what one do you have there?

Yeah, you need to close the big hole in your firewall/proxy as a priority really :?

    Re: Kids Installing Firefox

I have set the exe in the software restriction policy and i think it is sorting the problem out, but when never versions come out they can get around it again.

regarding (j17sparky) how would i take the gateway out of the dhcp info that gets sent out, and would this affect anything else.

Also i dont have access to the firewall, i wouldnt really know how to block access or set up so it only goes though the proxy

Use software restriction policy to block executables running from other then the areas you want. Then they cant run it regardless.

As others have mentioned you should look at your proxy to find out why it lets people browse the internet without enabling it. This is a huge security hole.

If you go into DHCP it should be quite obvious how to get rid of the default gateway. What affect it will have depends on how your software is setup but we've had no problems at all. Only one is sybalius which needs to be activated but that just means manually adding the gateway while it does so.

Thanks for the help removing the gateway seems to have sorted that problem out, although like some how said other problems could arise.

But i guess there is still a flaw in our system somewhere, as some people have said setting the gateway to look towards the proxy.

    Thanks again

    Re: Kids Installing Firefox

internet is still working fine, but now the smt couldnt get on to the internet, but this was due to them bypassing the cachepilot to access the internet freely, when i asked why they did this, they said so they could get onto blocked sites.

we let them access the proxy settings as they are allowed to access the internet at home and need to turn the proxy off, i dont think they should be allowed internet access at home.

    Opinions on that differ greatly.

Personally I think they should, but they use a seperate user account which is local to the laptop for home use.

They cannot log onto their network id unless in school.

I can understand the point of view they need to work from home and the such, but what i dont get is why get internet access in your home when you dont have a computer. surely you would own a computer first then get internet access.

We use the offline files system to allow staff to sync the documents and then use it at home.

    Re: Kids Installing Firefox

I'm just about to plug this security hole in our network, does everyone change their DHCP settings gateway to their proxies(cachepilot in our case) instead of their main routers?

It's funny how I was offering advice then found we have a very similar problem as well!

    Damn firefox installer!
