hehe I have their OU Excuded from the GP structure - just in case

Manualy update them - tho i may make a little GP for them so they do what you mention. I just dont want them install buggy hotfixes - clients dont matter as much but imagine the server messed up from a buggy hotfix. TOO much hassle i think

is dns functioning? What happens if you put in the ip address instead of the server name?
Is the website running? Can you telnet to the server:8530 ok?
Thanks Geoff, I had to change the server name to the ip address to get WSUS working in the policy. WSUS has a lot to do now

You might want to look and try and fix the underlying DNS problem that's causing you to have to do that. It will cause other problems sooner or later.

Another footnote to WSUS issues I have had today in setting up a downstream server from the main one I setup a while back (Just thought I would let people know). I was getting a "VerifyWUServerURL() failed with hr=0x80072efd" error when running ClientDiag.exe for troubleshooting WSUS on the client. I found this post in the end after hours of messing about: WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool - VerifyWUServerURL() failed with hr=0x80072efd

Basically it says "Despite what WSUS setup had said about setting itself up on port 8530 - it had not, and was running on Port 80. As soon As I changed the GPO from

    http://server.domain.com:8530
    to
    http://server.domain.com
It burst into life and started working "

I went at this from a different angle and went into IIS and change the port number on the website from 80 to 8530 which is what it should have been in the first place which also worked!
    Thanks
