Hi,
Wierd problem has arrised. A couple of computers on the network, have started asking for an administrator account when plugging in a USB device, in most cases, this isa USB Flash drive, and the computer wants to install drivers for that device, this only started when the computer was upgraded to a brand-new PC.
However, this problem only exsists on the two computers, there is an identical computer, opposite this one, with another member of staff, and this computer does not ask for administrator account to install the drivers for a pen drive.
Once the drivers are installed, that pendrive can then be used at free will, however, with the role of this person in the compnay, its regular that other members of staff give her there pen drives with a document on to print professionally, and EVERY SINGLE PENDRIVE has to be installed before use.
The computer opposite, takes all pendrives without a problem or request for an administrator account to install the device.
Any ideas welcome.
Si

Any way this update only effects certain machines? At current its only affecting one of two identical machines, with identical rights on the network.
Literally plugged my pendrive into the problematic machine, it wanted an admin auth, plugged it into the other machine that is identical, and it opened the drive.

PS - Yes there both XP, and its Psymon because its hard work ever getting Simon as a user account anywhere

If you've multiple usb ports - it remembers which you've authorised in the past - so if you stick the device into a different port =- you get the error again - most irritating.

This kind of problem is typically because something installed on that box has damaged bits of the very fragile driver signing "ecology". Look at KB822798. The catroot2 rename in Method 3 often solves one of the most prevalent causes of non-admin penstick trouble - it's harmless and worth the two mins it takes to try.
[Caution: I'd skip Method 9]

Yes - well it has here anyway. Did the lot in a computer startup script and tested it in one OU - so far all PC's in that OU no longer require admin for installing these things.
