    Google Chrome vs IE - Looking for the "Open / Save / Cancel" options?

    Hi,

    We are looking to move to chrome but ion testing one of the features we need and use in IE is when we click a link (mainly intranet, e.g. "X:\Wordfile.docx") IE brings up the option to open, save or cancel.

    So far I have only seen that Chrome can just Save it THEN open it from that new saved location.

    We need to have "Open" so that if any changes are made and then the document is saved it updates its original location.
    Has anyone seen this option somewhere please have had a good look anbd google!

    Thanks in advance

    If you want .docx files to open automatically as soon as they are downloaded, try adding the following setting to your master_preferences file.

    Code:
    {
       "homepage": "http://www.google.co.uk",
       "download": {
          "directory_upgrade": true,
          "extensions_to_open": "docx",
          "prompt_for_download": false
       }
    }
    This is equivalent to selecting the 'Always open files of this type' option for .docx files in your download bar.

    Thanks arthur...

    Sometimes (probably most of the time) they will need to save normally. Its just when using the intranet and Worcestershires Gateway site that they need to OPEN and edit directly then save...

    Are you sure that this doesnt download it first then automaticaly open it from that new saved location?
    If not this would be great if i could set it automatically open from certain websites? i.e. the 2 listed above.

    Do both of those sites rely on an Internet Explorer plug-in to upload the documents directly after saving?

    Actually that is what would happen. Sorry.

    I'm not sure if this is an option, but Google make a Chrome extension called Legacy Browser Support that can force just the two sites you mentioned above to open in Internet Explorer. Should you need it, the CRX file for this extension can be download from here (right-click, Save Link As).

    Thats one of the reasons we've held off using chrome. Our intranet uses a lot of links like file://server/path/file.ext and they just don't work at all in chrome. bl--dy nuisance as anything these days seems to require IE9+ and we're stuck on IE8 because we have a lot of XP machines that won't get upgraded for a year or so!

    Did you try adding the switch below to your shortcut?

    Code:
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --allow-file-access-from-files

    I tried that, and clicking a file:// type of link still does nothing. Either we stick with IE or change the intranet!
