Completely fresh install, using a CD that has Service Pack 2 integrated. After installing all the updates (including IE7) but with no other software Windows has eaten up 4.45GB 8O
- System restore is OFF.
- I've deleted all the update uninstall files from c:\windows
- I've deleted driver files that I put on.
I'm sure it wasn't that bad before, but I can't really recall. How much space is IE7 supposed to take?
According to Microsoft Windows XP, with SP2 needs just over 1GB. This approximately 400% wrong! You start noticing inaccuracies like this when your hard drives are only 7GB (bloody RM!).
Any ideas where I can get about 3 GB back from?

You'll be able to reclaim some from the temp folders in D&S\%users% and Windows folders. Make sure hibernation is turned off if it's not a laptop.

As it's fresh install, there hasn't been a chance for that kind of build up.
I've just found 500mb in c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download which is, apprently, safe to delete (junk from windows update). (It's like cleaning up after a child!)
Just another 2.5 gb to go!

You sure you got all the drivers? Driver.cab, and any 3rd party ways of storing drivers such as autoimage/driverpacks?
What about the page file? How bigs that? iirc windows takes 1.5x your physical ram so on a 1gb machine that could be 1.5gb straight away

Possibly not, I've just removed the driver files I added put to the CD. Is there any disadvantages of removing driver.cab - what would happen if i wanted to install, say, a usb pen drive?
- That's about 100mb

512mb on this machine. So 750mb. Is it safe to reduce this?

because it uses more resources, for example word processing in linux on a 386 uses less power than vista because vista sucks more (power), thus putting dos/linux on a laptop would make the battery last longer.
I have no idea how this relates to the problem in hand.

That does not explain how Vista eats your battery.
Vista is more graphically enhanced and depending on the specs on your laptop, may use more CPU usage and if thats the case your CPU will require more cooling - [ using the fans, if any ]
Laptop screens use a great deal of juice too.
So turn off all the bells and whistles of Vista, cap your CPU using [ if possible ], use the screen at a lower brightness, turn off any unnecessary services and programs which are using CPU etc and I am sure Vista won't eat your battery.....
You have a lot to learn my young padawan - who is your master btw ?
