    Problems with group policy

Right, we have housed out VLE server internally and am wanting to change the home page. Ok, so ive edited to group policy and added in the new web address. forced a gpupdate using the /force command. Tried a kids logon, still the old home page. Ran a resultant set of policies, looked at the settings and it is showing the new web address but when you login it shows the old home page. Anyone have any ideas?

    Re: Problems with group policy

    This might help...

Use Group Policy Objects to set advanced settings - You must have the Group Policy set to Preference mode to customize Internet Explorer.

    To do this...

    1. Open the Group Policy Editor by using Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

    2. Locate and click Internet Explorer Maintenance under Windows Settings in User Configuration.

    3. Right-click Internet Explorer Maintenance, and then click Preference Mode.

If a policy is already defined, you must click Reset Browser Settings before you can place this policy in Preference mode. When you reset the browser settings, any policy settings that are specified to that Group Policy are reset.

Note Preference mode settings are set by an administrator; however, you can change the settings after the policy is applied (for example, your home page or settings on the Advanced tab). After the policy is applied to a client computer, you can change your home page and advanced settings.

If the administrator does not want users to change the settings, the administrator can apply a restriction by using the Administrative templates in the GPO.

An administrator must also combine GPOs, an organizational unit, a user, or a computer by implementing both a Preference mode and a MAINTENANCE MODE GPO.

    Are you redirecting 'Application data'?

Cheers, Have put the internet explorer maintanance into preference mode re-added the home page URL, looked at the additional settings, took the temp internet files down to 1 mb, so will see what this does.

What i have noticed is that when i run gpupdate, in event viewer there is no log to say the ntfrs has been applied and the gpupdate /force has finished.

    Re: Problems with group policy

I had exactly the same issue and only stumbled upon the solution.

All Home pages were set to the new internal VLE site, yet still the Pupils were sent to the old home page.

Under Internet Explorer 7 adm you can set the action to remove the 'First Run' option screen. If you set 'Send to home page' as setting it explicitly asks for a site rather than using the settings from other GPOs. This is where I found our rogue setting for the old website.

Obviously this only applies if you have Internet Explorer 7 installed with the First Run disabled and instead going to Home Page.

    Re: Problems with group policy

Sorry the policy I meant was 'Disable Changing Home Page Settings under User Config -> Admin Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Disable Changing Home Page Settings'

If you have set this policy with your old website as the redirected page - this setting overrides all other GPO settings. If this is set to your old home page - then that page takes precedence over what the GPO is setting as home page under User Config -> Windows Settings -> Internet Explorer Maintenance -> URLs.
