2nd February 2013, 07:45 PM #1 New Domain Name
Just a quick one, when we get our new servers (Hopefully soon!) I want to start fresh, with a new domain. Currently our internal name is the same as our external website. But we are also now a Studio School as well. So at the moment the Studio School computers get the same internal DNS and domain, which is not really what is should be on. Same as any other services like OWA, RD Gateway, VLE, etc. Can anyone think of a decent domain name that could be used of both of them, inside and externally. We of course keep both websites going through. We are The_Ockendon_Academy, and the name of the Studio School is Ockendon_Studio_School. Thanks

Ockendon.co.uk (primary forest)
Then you can have subdomains / Trees of the following.
Studio.ockendon.co.uk and academy.ockendon.co.uk
This works in my mind

2nd February 2013, 08:34 PM #3 Sounds a good idea in general.
What's the downsides of subdomains in a forest? Never have tried it, can you move user/computer objects for example dragging, like you normally do to move objects.
Was thinking of just using the one domain.
I did look at ockendon.com and .co.uk, both are taken

2nd February 2013, 08:36 PM #4 Yes you can drag and drop provided both are in the primary forest.
Ockendon.net or .org taken?

2nd February 2013, 08:39 PM #5 Subdomains/trees also means you can have 1 physical server serving both the academy / studio and have OU's set up accordingly, and run as before. The whole thing essentially stays the same as it was, however runs on 1 ip range, 1 subnet range etc.

2nd February 2013, 08:51 PM #6 Ah thats good. How about security groups? So for example all servers and groups are in the primary domain. Can users in either subdomain, be members of any of those groups? Or is where trusts have to be done or is trust any between different forest's.
Also how about a student from the subdomain academy needed to get on a computer in studio domain, can the user do that?
One DC can do all this right?? or do you need one DC for the primary forest, one DC for each sub domain?
Seems we have
.org
.org.uk
.eu
.uk.com
.co
Gussing .org or .co
edit - ignore some of my question, just saw your last post
