'lo folx,
I'm looking for a bit of (hopefully free) software that will allow my girlfriend's windows-using semi-computer-literate mother to capture some video from a sony camera on her windows XP box. Unfortunately, I have to take everything i need with me, as they have no internet access to speak of. I *presume* its a firewire connector, but I haven't actually seen the thing :-/
Anyone suggest any good software?
Ta,
Tom
A Sony camera I worked with recently had a USB-to-MiniUSB connector. It came with a CD that had the required drivers, and Microsoft Movie Maker (part of XP) did the capturing.

Ah.. so we may just need drivers for this camera - Sony Digital Video Cassette recorder 8 - GV-D800 is the model number i have been given. knowing the kenyans it will be hideously behind the currve![]()
Is it one of these???

Looks VERY different to what I was talking about (A camcorder)...

I think so. Somehow there are videos on this device that we need to get off and write to cd. Unfortunately I won't see the damn thing til I get over there, so i need to be as well armed as possible![]()

I know this isn’t useful for you but maybe good for someone else, you can use iMove integrated into the MAC OS X to do this
ok Tom, armed with the model number (maybe phone your g/f's mum again to double check) I'd check the Sony website for any relevant manuals.

kearton: had a look - sony europe are total toss, absolutely nowt. Got a pdf manual from sony us, but its not a lot of help - no driver downloads either. Gonna take a linux livecd with cinerella, just see what i can do i think.
does not seem to be any free/open source windows video editing stuff, clearly all the hobbyists rip it off :-/
