Re: bg info with a desktop from group policy

I got BGInfo working after some long trial and error. Basically I produced two .bgi files one for the system and one for the user and used the lines below in the startup, shutdown, user logon/logoff scripts.

    Userlogon Script

    copy /y \\jschs2\public\apps\bginfo\bginfo.bgi c:\windows\bginfo
    c:\windows\bginfo\bginfo.exe c:\windows\bginfo\bginfo.bgi /timer:0 /silent

    User logoff Script

    %systemroot%\bginfo\bginfo.exe %systemroot%\bginfo\sysbgi\bginfo.bgi /timer:0 /silent

    Machine Startup Script

    copy /y \\jschs2\public\apps\bginfo\sysbgi\bginfo.bgi c:\windows\bginfo\sysbgi

    Machine Shutdown Script

    del %systemroot%\bginfo\bginfo.bmp /q
    del %systemroot%\bginfo.bmp /q

This way it shows detail for the current logged on user and also when the machine has no user logged on to it.

jsnetman: can i assume then that you still had to go around and install bginfo on every machine first?

Certainly not! I created folders in c:\windows called bginfo and sysbginfo and set the permissions for students to allow write access in the file system object in AD although they cannot actaually see the C drive. The script in my last post copies the .bgi to all the machines. Also deployed the exe by creating an msi using Winstall Le.

ah i see, but bginfo.exe still is needed on each machine as opposed to a network share for the machine startup to work.
I currently use bginfo via a login script and server share for all my users and it works well but not for machine start up.

Yes you can run it from a share, I don't think it really matters where the exe is.

How can you get the machine to run a startup script without having to go round every machine indivually and it to the local GPO ?
As surely the machine cannot use a network shared file on startup, before any users have logged in?

A workstation that is a member of a domain is seen as a "user" on the domain so you can create a share on a server which the workstation has access to even when not logged on.

We use Ghost and build a package to fire out the school logo, bginfo and registry changes necessary and to put a shortcut into All Users - startup to run bginfo. A tweak to the workstations GPO changes the security on the bginfo.bmp.

I'm currently looking at changing it to run across the network as I'm a great believer in making things as easy as possible!

Re: bg info with a desktop from group policy

So is it possible to distribute a startup script via a GPOs, the same way that you would do a logon script for users but with startup script for machines ?
    Thanks.

If you want to run this from the local PC, just knock up a few lines in your logon script which copies the bginfo.exe over to a location on the client. [ Even to the startup folder if you wish ] Or just run it from a share like I have.

To add a machine startup script, go into group policy management console, find the level at which you want to add the script and either create a new GPO or edit an existing one.

In the object editor, look in Computer configuration, Windows settings, scripts, startup and add your script.

The one thing you need to do which might not be obvious is to make sure that the group "domain computers" has access to any network shares etc that you want to access in the startup script.

eg if we have a share called \\student\cdimages - that folder has NTFS permissions which include "domain computers:r" and the share allows everyone to read.

Re: bg info with a desktop from group policy

Thanks for the fast replies, this is working to an extent but for some reason the ctrl+alt+del screen background does not update itself until a user has logged on and back out again, could this be because the machine needs to have connected to its domain once before it can update itself, although shouldnt the startup script make it so the script is run before anybody logs on?
    Thanks.

Re: bg info with a desktop from group policy

My original post should have read:

    copy /y \\jschs2\public\apps\bginfo\sysbgi\bginfo.bgi c:\windows\bginfo\sysbgi
    del %systemroot%\bginfo\bginfo.bmp /q
    del %systemroot%\bginfo.bmp /q
    %systemroot%\bginfo\bginfo.exe %systemroot%\bginfo\sysbgi\bginfo.bgi /timer:0 /silent

For the original machine startup script. Try similar in your machine start up script and it should work.
