....is Backupexec the biggest load of crap since it was taken over and changed by Symantec ?

it does seem overly complicated and expensive... It has however been largely reliable for us.
i have found that backup exec is reliable yes it may be expensive and their are other cheaper options out their but it has served us well
The software itself is actually quite good... its just dealing with symantec and their VERY strange ways of doing things (such as updates and downloads lol)

I must admit that I do not get a reliable backup as there is always some error or other reported.
Now I have noticed that folders are getting backed up but not their contents. I am raising a ticket about this now.
I used to see this on our old server but I can't remember what the fix was [hope it isn't a re-install]
i user an older version at a primary and its fine, the later versions with symantec branding all over the place does the job but have to see if there is any change in reliability
Been using it nearly ten years and never found an issue with it.

The CA ArcServe stuff is way worse, you want the definition of needlessly complicated and largely pointless, start there.

Feeling grumbly with Symantec licencing at the moment, our Backup Execs were due and a quote was sent over, including the new line
SYMC DESKTOP LAPTOP OPTION 7.0 WIN 1-10 USERS RENEWAL BASIC 12 MONTHS ACAD BAND S - 2 - 27/11/2012 - £104.44
What I said: “Not sure what the desktop line is –we’ve never run that and I don’t recall seeing it before.”
What he said: “The desktop laptop option is a new add-on to your Backup Exec server with the 2012 version. It is optional and only useful if you wish to back up PCs and laptops.”
What I should have said: “Then why the fsck did you put it onto the quote if I never asked for it and have never expressed an interest in it you money grabbing moron? Did you think I didn’t pay attention to the money I spent? Do you think I actually just believe what sales people tell me? Die in a fire!”
Bloody salesmen, not having a good month with them atm.
Appart from some strange tape management issues , I quite like it.
Better than DPM.

It was ok.
Assuming anyone still thinking it is hasn't used 2012 yet which is terrible.

Yup, terrible software. We ran 11d for a while, until our entire catalog corrupted, so we couldn't do any restoration. Their response? Remove backup exec completely and reinstall it all...
We since switched to BackupAssist, which is basically just a nice front end for NTBackup and it works perfectly. Encrypted backups in TrueCrypt containers using .bkf files. Easy to restore from, easy to run, easy to edit. And best of all - cheap.

Cant complain either, it has been used by us for ages and we have had no problems. I mean put it this way, it serves its purpose!
