Vista and Server2003 print server
Maybe I'm just doing something stupid - I can't get this to work!
My desk PC is now running Vista Business and I can't get a printer on the print server (running server2003) to install. It seems that my computer can't use the drivers that are built in to Vista to install a printer on a server and the server obviously does not have the Vista drivers installed.
Printers that I need are an HP2550n and HP1320
Anyone know where I'm going wrong?
Re: Vista and Server2003 print server
Can't you add the drivers to the print server?
Re: Vista and Server2003 print server
If I had some drivers I could - they're not on the HP website :( They're built into Vista. Can someone help me extract them? :)
Re: Vista and Server2003 print server
Does C:\windows\inf still exist on Vista?
Re: Vista and Server2003 print server
doh! I've only i had setup remote access to my home pc Geoff... could have answered that question ;)
You can't [AFAIK] add Vista specific drivers to the 2003 print server as it doesnt "know" about vista, much in the same way as you couldn't add XP drivers to an installed printer in server 2000 [if any of that makes sense].
As im sorta lookin into School's agreement, we havent ordered a single vista business license for me to try out, although the new PC's that are "en route" will have the vista express upgrade voucher with them so it wont be long before i can help with this stuff :)
Regards
Nath

Ok, what about doing it the other way round then. Installing the printer as a local printer then changing the port to point to the remote print server queue?

Only problem there is physical location and weight of these things!
Re: Vista and Server2003 print server
printer has a network connection? Point it to the printer ip instead of the server.

You misunderstand. Install the printer driver as if the printer was installed to LPT1. i.e., pretend. Then change the port to point to where it really is.

Why didn't I think of that?
Sometimes it just takes someone else to look at the problem I guess- all ok now! :)
thanks
Re: Vista and Server2003 print server
I've done that on my home network for my printers, used the built in drivers for my Samsungs then changed the port to a network one to get round it being told by my setup that there are no drivers for it.
