Cannot browse net, but Ping OK

Hi,

Got a laptop here, can ping out to my router OK, and can also ping out to any internet site you like (tried bbc.co.uk edugeek.net and google) but as soon as you try and access any site through Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox Portable it just says that the connection is unavailable.

Vista reports I'm connected to the Internet OK, can access everything perfectly OK with the other machines connected to the router, so it's clearly just this laptop.

Tried restarting, "repairing" the connection, disabling all firewalls in sight...but still nothing.

Found what looked like a fix in the MS KB but that was for Beta versions of Vista/Longhorn.

Any suggestions welcome!

IP V6? I had this problem with an ex's laptop, I just ran service pack upgrade it fixed itself but i beleive it was something to do with IPV6

This would point to a possible DNS problem. Within the advanced TCP/IP settings of your ethernet adapter or wireless adapter, try setting your DNS entries to Open DNS:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

I had this problem once, although on an XP computer which had Norton Internet Security or 360 or whatever it's called now.

It had updated, but hadn't updated correctly, so as it blocks all traffic until it's loaded you could ping, but not go on the net. Another thing to possibly check?

Yep, this has got norton *shudders* tried turning the firewall off but that didn't help. will take a closer look at that in a mo, just installing every single windows update it can find at the moment, will let you know.

Tried the OpenDNS settings, no joy. Purely out of interest, why should forcing different DNS servers make a difference, considering other machines on the router work OK?

Righteo,

* Checked Proxy Settings, nothing set whatsoever
* Checked Vista is up-to-date
* Checked Norton 360 is up-to-date
* Tried using OpenDNS as DNS servers

how long has norton been on the laptop? If its a fairly new install of norton did the problem exist before or has it just occured. Might be worth seeing if the laptop works on a diff network

It's from one of the Admin staff at school. Laptop is quite new so I would assume it was factory-installed. Member of staff shoved it my way because she had this problem at home with her BT HomeHub - brought it home to my 3com setup and it's the exact same problem :( sad times.

you could back up all the work and restor it to an earlier date before the issue began? Might be worth removing norton and installing avg. Another possibilty you coudl try using winsockfix http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/N...nSockFix.shtml allowing you to rebuild your TCP/IP

Very good point. Will have to check with the staff member first...will keep you posted how I get on.

you cold also try ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /renew in cmd

I'm almost 100% sure this is down to IPV6/IPV4, try googling IPV6 errors on vista will probley chuck something up.

I've had the same problem with Symantec internet security on vista on one of the teachers laptops here - in my case it worked before installing SP1 then could only ping when SP1 was installed.

Removing the offending symantec product sorted it out(you'll probably need to find the removal tool, their uninstall's are useless and leave far too much behind, in my case it also left the above problem behind argh!)

I am having this exact problem in Windows 7, for me, it's detecting 2 networks (Home network, and unknown).

If I hard set the IP, it all works perfectly...
