I want to get a feel for how other schools are doing things regarding Vista. I'm sure there have been other threads like this in the past, but I've got a slightly different slant, seeing as Windows 7 is on the horizon....
Are you using Vista? Will you be using it (ever?), considering Windows 7 is coming?
We're a Secondary school with a Technology specialism, and we used to be at the 'cutting edge' of technology and we want to be again...

Think we will stick to xp here for as long as possible. XP is the OS MS got right it seems, it is stable easily adaptable and compatible with nearly everything.
It was on the cards for year 3 (almost through year 1) of the 3 year plan but not now...

We moved to RM CC4 and found problems with some of our music software on an XP machine (something to do with the RM components), yet it works fine on Vista.
Vista also seems to run quicker for us than XP, which is an unexpected advantage. We haven't yet done a larger rollout beyond our Music machines, but likely will "convert" further machines in the coming months, but certainly not a fully-blown en-masse XP to Vista changeover. Fortunately we have exceptionally specced hardware which is more than capable of running Vista, so as far as that is concerned, we are in a position to.

Personally I wouldn't choose the OS as being part of your 'cutting edge' technology. I would use a stable and established OS as a base for using cutting edge tools. Cutting edge usually brings a bunch of problems for you, which is manageable if you are having problems with an app but if the OS is giving grief then that can wipe out your entire operation.Quote:

I don't think we'll be making a move to Vista untill there is a need to be supporting machine with 4gb RAM. XP does everything we need.
We have started rolling it out as and when. You get the latest version anyway with M$ schools agreement - might as well get your monies worth.
When Windows 7 comes out we will start rolling that out too. Having gone through server 2008/vista migration - most stuff will be in place ready as I believe GPOs etc will be pretty much the same.
Not had any problems with Vista so far, seems to run faster on most of the older machines than XP did:confused:
no plan for it here either not for a long time at least.
but what about vista as a home user though guys do you still have xp or have you made the switch and if so was it worth it??
