Hi there
A member of staff has asked me to set his new Vista laptop up so that he can use the internet from work or home.
On his XP laptop, I simply did it with hardware profiles, each with different wireless settings, however search as I might, I cannot find the Hardware Profiles setting on Vista.
Can anyone shed any light on this please?

I've been using a piece of freeware called Proxy Switcher Lite (pretty sure it's Vista compatible, though you may find that whoever does your filtering won't allow access to the site). This discussion suggests a script-based way of dealing with the problem (which is probably a much better idea, but I have yet to implement it :o).
No Vista machines here, so I can't help on the Hardware Profiles!
Thanks, but it's not just the Proxy settings, most of the staff know how to chance those, its the actual IP settings.
Our wireless has static IP's, theres no DHCP, so to change between their home and work networks they'd have to change the IP settings too, which theyre a little less confident about doing.
Talking of scripts, I'd assume I could write a VBScript to do all of the above?

Not a problem I've had to deal with, but isn't it possible to set 2 different TCP/IP settings for the wireless connection? (One DHCP, the other "set"). I don't know if it would switch automatically though. Of course, this could be what you've done and it needs the profile change to activate. Of course, this was looking at an XP machine - quite possible different on Vista!

can i ask why you dont have DHCP on the wireless?
I've often wondered myself, i'd imagine it's so that if any pupils did get hold of the wireless settings, they still wouldn't have much luck accessing the network...
here wireless is on another v-lan, staff can access the internet only and if they want to use network resources i have allowed it so they can access one server on one port they make a terminal session.Quote:
