SP1 Failed - Am I suprised

I'm writing this on my home pc in safe mode with networking :)

I downloaded SP1 from the Volume Licensing site (I use Vista for Business), the update seemed weird as it installed some stuff, then started a shutdown and installed some more stuff, then when it rebooted it installed the bulk of the stuff. I left it on last night as I thought it was still installing but when I got up in the middle of the night it was on the horrible turquoise screen with the swirls with nothing else on. CTRL ALT DEL flashed the screen but task manager doesn't kick in. Haven't got a disc at home to do a repair if I need to. Event log looks like some stuff failed to start so I need to do a bit of browsing. If I get it working I might comment on if its any better.

Really want to like Vista but theres stuff I hate but I'll stick with it.

Ermmmm.... its started working and I think I just realised what happened and I am a little embaressed but I will share to I can be ripped :)

I booted into safe mode and removed SP1... it didn't fix it so I tried reinstalling SP1.. nope still same problem.

So I thought I would do a repair... couldn't get my PC to boot to DVD... its an upgrade so I didn't have to do it last time so I was stuck

Then I tried installing alongside the old OS

There was no display showing at all so I checked my wires on my monitor... I have a dual output graphics card , one goes to my HD tv via a HDMI socket.

I changed the sockets over and nothing showed up so I rebooted... and.... well.. the original OS appeared. It looks like it reset the outputs of my graphics card and was dispalying the secondary monitor on my main screen.

not windows fault at all, it was my hangover state that missed it.

Now to reinstall AVG and my firewall... which I removed to see if that was an issue. :)

This probably will be of no help to anyone but I feel better.

I have literally just installed the Service Pack, via TechNet - which has taken me three days to find out where they've hidden it, which is another story.

Everything seems to work, apart from Norton AV complaining about a system scan being needed. Installation time was just over fifty minutes on my machine (Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 64bit Ultimate)

If anything goes horribly wrong I'll post the details.

I've been told that one of the patches applied through windows update pre-SP causes an infinate loop in booting to occur when you install the SP on some machines so it just constantly reboots. The only way to fix it is to format.

Apparently it has been pulled from windows update for a couple of days until a fix can be incorporated.

@Trapper - Nearly an hour to install a Service Pack, that's insane! Your spec isn't bad either. I work on machines which are a lot slower.

Personally I would create a slipstreamed CD, but apparently Microsoft have made it incredibly difficult! A quick google search and here's what I came up with, I hope someone can try?

Download the SP and extract it using the D:\Service_Pack_NAME -x switch. Extract to C:\VistaPack

Download vLite, choose your Vista DVD and specify a target.

Now for integration! Choose to integrate Hotfixes and choose the cab files you extracted from the SP earlier, located in C:\VistaPack

You should now have a Vista ISO with SP1 included!

It's not going too well!

Machine wouldn't boot this morning. It would keep rebooting, and when I finally got into Windows, the performance was awful.

I've reimaged back to pre-SP1 and I'm trying it again, as I've had several BSoDs in the past week due to a dodgy graphics card, so that might have caused some damage to the OS.

@Joedetic - I had that issue with an ASUS P5N-E SLI board, one of the major boards affected. It was a bad update, which they *finally* pulled, I just hid the update to blame when I worked out which one it was.

Well I'm backing up to format and install x64 later today. I was using a temp installation of x32 for a while to see if i wanted to use vista. I've just decided to go with it.

Fingers crossed the SP1 won't bone my PC :)

Naughty words here...I have a teachers Acer on the desk with that reboot loop now. And It's getting a reinstall, and stuff the thing. EXCELLENT OS, is Vista..really impressed with it..:rolleyes:

As I said, mine worked it was my brainfreeze that was the problem.

Seems quicker although it is saying theres a update to my Lan driver now which when i try and install it locks up the machines.

Only other thing I've noticed is the RDP box is slightly different.
