Mine didn't ask for a key, used the business version.

I burnt my image by mounting the IMG file in Deamon tools and doing a copy DVD with Nero, worked fine.

You got it from Microsoft and not a dodgy source that is always, ultimately, more reliable?

    Re: Vista is Out!

I've found that it doesn't ask for a key, but you only have 30 days to activate it.

My VLK licence renewal is still being processed (Ran out on the 1st November would you believe!!!)

I'm tempted to put it on my computer and hope that the licence renewal come through in the next 30 day... but can I risk it!

I thought that the licences weren't available until the 30th of November anyway???

    Re: Vista is Out!

When I look on the Microsoft Licensing Site it doesn't list a key so I guess its not out yet.

So happy I found this site as it saves me a few quid a year ordering discs. Got the new Encarta download over the weekend as well as the two versions of Vista. My ISP hates me though as they throttled me when I exceeded 20Gb.

Who did you get the key from Stewart? Ramesys or MS or someone else?

You guys should also be aware that there are two types of Key for Vista. A KMS key - which you need a centralised server to authorise on the LAN and also a MAK key wich works very simillar to the old type of activation.

Yeah, most people for testing will need to use a MAK key unless they are going to have 25 machines all plugged in at once for testing purposes.

Yeah I've gone for a MAK Key - though is the 100 activation liimit a restriction on the number of different PCs i can install on or a limit of how often i can re-activate on the same PC?

I'm guessing its the former - allowing the user to re-install Vista onto the same PC as often as they want but are limited to 100 PC's

How does the KMS centralized server work? And what sort of server do you need to run it?

At the moment the KMS service only runs on either a 'longhorn' server or a vista machine. It is also set to be included in 2003 sp2.

The KMS service basically acts alot like WSUS in that the clients go to it and then it goes to MS. For a vista client to be authorised by the KMS it must log onto the LAN at least every six months.

..so what if it isn't authorised, someone goes long-term ill etc - is the license revoked? do MS Deny access to the machine? I read this article last night - pretty scary, but does it look to be true? http://www.securityfocus.com/columnists/423/1

:edit - sorry I gave link to p4

    Re: Vista is Out!

It aparently goes into a reduced functionality mode that then gives the user 30 days to activate it again. After that they're scr3wed!
