    Vista and Linux

I want to try to learn about and install Linux.

Can you tell me if it will install alongside Vista so I can have dual boot capability.

Also can you tell me which is the simplest Linux OS to start on.

Yes you can install Linux alongside Windows. I would recommend Ubuntu Desktop Edition | Ubuntu as an easy to use / learn version of Linux.

There are 4 options for getting a working Ubuntu setup

Installing a Dual-Boot with Windows and Ubuntu

    1) You can install it by downloading the CD Image and burning the iso. The installer will allow you to resize your windows partition.

[This is the normal method, fairly technical]

    2) You can install ubuntu from inside windows using this guide.
Installing Ubuntu From A Windows System With Wubi | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

[This is quite easy to do, I would do it this way if I were you]

    3) You can setup a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox

[Again quite technical but it lets you run windows and ubuntu side by side]

    4) You can find an old machine that you can get your hands on and install ubuntu on it. Ubuntu will run well on older hardware.

[Try and get at least a P4 CPU with 256MB of RAM and a 20GB Hard Disk]

I would agree, start with Ubuntu. I'm a Debian man, from which Ubuntu is derived, so shout if you're stuck
