Inside Vista SP1 File Copy Improvements
Fo those of you that are still bothered by this issue and pre SP1 it's certainly a pain there is some info on Mark Russinovich's blog. It's an intersting read but we'll wait to see the results.

Perhaps the biggest drawback of the algorithm, and the one that has caused many Vista users to complain, is that for copies involving a large group of files between 256KB and tens of MB in size, the perceived performance of the copy can be significantly worse than on Windows XP.

Unfair to call it "technobabble" - research like this is what Mark does (and is very good at - he's one of the sysinternals team).
What is fair, is to wonder why all that research wasn't done internally long before Vista was shipped so that they didn't make such a *&^! up of it! I find it quite incredible that MS could let such a dire experience be part of their flagship product ...
