    Vista + Server 03/08

We are planning to implement Vista to our school in the next year(ish). What we would like to know is how vista will work with our roaming profiles and also what benefits we will lose/gain from using windows server 2003 and what we will lose/gain with 2008.

If anyone can fill me in this would be great!!

(we will be using vista business, we have a network running at 100 mbps (including the servers - no money for a gbit switch a min.) and the servers are almost brand new, but we don't mind purchasing another for 2008)

Personal opinion would be to spend the money saved from not going to vista on a decent backbone infrastructure. - Not overly helpful, but its what I'd do all things considered.

Agreed. Upgrade your network core to Gigabit.

    i agree

try and stick with server 2003, and xp pro if at all possible, i don't see any benefits of visturd at all yet, or any reason to upgrade to it, unless you want to make yourself look bad.?

I'd agree with the others - unless you have a compelling reason to commit suicide go with Vista then I'd stick with XP.

If you do need to make the change then you need to be aware that profiles are rather different and don't roam easily between Vista and XP - so if you have (say) a room of XP and a room of Vista the profiles won't move smoothly between them. There's a word document on the MS web site which gives details of what happens and how it works.

    Good luck :-)

    some feedback

i was actually sent an (online) form to fill in , to give feedback to microshaft .

well all i can say was the boxes were too small to fit in all i had to say, and on the subject of visturd the phrase - f**king b*ll*cks was written many times.

Becta are still advising caution in migrating to Vista:

Basically to save reading, XP and Vista profiles are not compatible you get a %profilename%.V2 for Vista ones on the system, I know as I have both
