My dad is having loads of grief trying to install a new printer. I live 80 miles awayy and can't see what is going on. Is there a free programme that will let me cintrol hids machine from mine. I am running win XP Pro. We are bothe running through wireless routers. I am sure I saw a programme called crossfire but I can't find it.
logmein is a fab piece of free software that allows control of remote computers:

VLC? My guess is it will be more time consuming explaining how to open firewall ports through the router+xp/NAT forwarding you might as well drive
Should that be VNC?Originally Posted by CyberNerd

still be good to see your dad once in a while
Logmein is all accessed through your browser. An applet is installed on the client machine so firewalls/routers/nat are not a problem.
you can also use messenger to remote desktop!

LogmeIn is the one for this - it just works and requires close to nil setting up![]()

\Yh instead of messing around opeing ports etc.. i would use Logmein.. i have use it in the past and havehad no problems works a treat. your dad will also be able to watch what you are doing so he could learn what to do just incase the problem occurs again.
Log me in defo if you want no hassell

Logmein is the better - I use it to sort out problems on my parent's PC. And at work.
You might like to try CrossLoop. It's more secure than LogMeIn in that it requires a user to be present at the remote PC to authorize the connection. It's basically a wrapper around some flavour of VNC I believe.

go to my pc, VNC, Remote Assistance? Remote Desktop Web Connection could be an idea but he might find it tricky configuring router etc

@aj
Thanks for that link![]()
Its looks as if it may be good for supporting people at home without having to drive out to their house![]()
I used to just use UltraVNC but with everybody now having routers its now really feasabile any more
