    Domain Controller Upgrade 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

I had previously seen a number of posts querying the upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 with respect to Domain Controllers.

The questions revolved around in place upgrades.

I can confirm we have taken the plunge ourselves, and the in place upgrade is seemless. We didn't feel brave enough to attempt a DC with a FSMO role, but we successfully completed a number of upgrades with DC's that were also DNS and GC servers.

There was no need to remove any of these roles, simply insert the media and choose the upgrade option, takes about an hour (in our environment anyway) but it comes back and resumes replication without any issues.

Hope this helps anyone considering a similar path.

I'm going to have to do this shortly, so thanks! I'm still going to be bricking it! I might just try it on a less important box first!

I tried it on a 2008 R2 FSMO role holder, didn't work sadly. That was most likely a hardware/driver issue as it's an HP DL360 G4 which is older than time itself. In the end, I just built a new VM and transferred the roles, but good to see that it can work.

Did you leave the FSMO roles inplace on a DC while you upgraded??

Possibly going to be trying this soon with two 2008R2 DCs with DHCP, DNS and DFS on them. One being the FSMO role holder.

Hoping a few others here go first and we have an idea of a few peoples experiences though

Need some of that nice DHCP failover 2012 is offering

No, the FSMO roles were the only ones I moved prior to upgrade...you can apparently leave these also, but I didn't want the hassle of seizing the roles from a failed upgrade.

We have dedicated DHCP servers, so our DC's also didn't have this role. But for DNS, GC and DFS there were no issues (was pleasantly surprised)
