Installing WSUS on Windows Server 2012 | Codes from the field
scroll down to restart without results
I am trying to install WSUS onto a 2012 R2 server, but when i install, it always fails, and comes up saying "The operation cannot be completed, because the server you specified requires a restart". I have restarted the server several times, and have done all windows updates. Google hasn't seem to have given me much help. Any ideas?

Fantastic! That worked, thank you so much!
I now have it installed. Do i just need to change my GPO specifying to use my WSUS as local intranet server? Any ports in Firewall that need opening? I have opened 80.
you need a gpo for pcs you want to get updates.
computer config\admin templates\windows components\windows update\specify intranet microsoft update service location then you put in the name\ip (i seem to find ip works better fomwtimes) of the server and if you accepted the defaults on server 2012r2 port 8530 so something like http://wsusserver:8530 in both boxes (and open up poty 8530 if the wizard diddnt do it for you
Ahh ok, thanks. I selected all defaults, but it opened up a 8531 in the firewall, so i have now modified my GPOs, thanks alot!
I have pushed out update GPO's and opened the firewall..but im getting 0 computers on WSUS! I run gpedit.msc on a client to see if it took the WSUS gpos and it hasnt, whats going on!?!?
gpedit just edits local group policy which will probably be empty you want rsop.msc or gpresult /h to see whats applied
Ah thanks for that. Turns out i had a hidden GPO that had everything redirected to a different WSUS server that we havent had for years! couldnt see it GPMC so ive sorted that out, Thanks for the help!
