7zip worked for me on Server 2012 R2 :) thanks
Give this a try,
make a new folder c:\empty put nothing in it. Download robocopy, Download Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools from Official Microsoft Download Center
It mirrors the empty folder to the folder that is to deep. It's also very handy for deleting large directories, like when your year 11 get archived to remove the folders in one easy hit.
robocopy c:\empty "annoying folder location" /mir
Disclaimer, this will delete everything if you d the syntax wrong. Please make sure you have a backup of any folders.
There isn't any need to download Robocopy as it is included with Windows now.

Launch the normal GUI interface for it, and go to create a new archive. Browse to the offending long path folder, right click and delete.
Got rid of all our previous students without so much as a hiccup using it.
