64bit print server, 32bit clients....issues - Fixed

Morning team.

Here's the situation.

We're moving all the print shares from a 32bit server to a 64bit one. We think we have successfully loaded both the 64bit and 32bit drivers onto the new server, however, when i alter the VB script to ensure that the clients install printers from the 64bit server, it wont work.

After closer inspection (when i run the script from a desktop), the script is complaining about a software restriction policy...which is preventing it from running. When we change the script back, and install the printers from the old 32bit server, the printers install fine.

I'm going to spend most of today looking into this, but i just thought i'd throw this one out to everyone, in hope that someone has seen the same issue.

EDIT - This issue has now been fixed. It appears that incorrect 32bit drivers were being used. After some more research, it appears that if PCL6 64bit drivers are being used, and then PCL6 32bit ones are also required. Sorted now.

You've moved from 2003 to 2008 haven't you? We had the same problem. Make sure you're using the PCL6 drivers, and definitely double-check you've got the x86 drivers installed too. Windows Server 2008 (and R2) have increased security. But yeah, IIRC using the PCL6 drivers rather than say PCL5/5e got us working.

Coolio, i'll give it a go.

Its the fact that the script moans about a software restriction policy which has got me confuddled....because i dont think we have any setup!

Check the event viewer to see what it's complaining about specifically in the SRP.

I abandoned print scripts when moving to our new print server - we use GPP (do you have 2008 DCs?) which solved many issues.

What OS are the clients? Does the script run at logon?

I don't if you've already done this, but the users/groups who need to print to these printers will have to have the correct permissions set to install the printers.

Yes, if you get an error about SRP then it will give more info on the event viewer (which GPO SRP caused it)
