Windows 2008 Quotas (W2K3 Domain)
We have a Windows 2003 based domain, XP Pro SP3 clients and a Windows 2008 (x86) based server for storage of user and shared areas (amongst over roles).
To manage storage capacity, and to encourage ‘good housekeeping’ of the said areas, we have enabled a hard limit quota template using File Resource Server Manager (FRSM). This works fine, and the quota template is auto applied to all the subfolders (User areas are created under the main folder with the quota rule applied).
The problem is although we have set a quota that will be more than ample for 90%+ of our users; some users require additional capacity depending on their courses etc (Music Tech, IT Animation etc).
I am looking for the ‘best’ centralised way of managing and achieving this.
- I know I could just change the Quota Template for each individual User Area Folder to the required capacity. Although ok at first, long term harder it could be a nightmare to administrate.
- Or, move the user area folders to a different subfolder that has an auto apply quota template matching their requirements, but I’m not going to move folders and shares all the time!
Ideally, I like would like to use the good old method of adding users to a group, and that membership of the group determines what quota is applied. Far easier to manage and maintain. A user starts Music Tech simply add them to the Music Tech Group (and vice versa).
How (if possible) can this be achieved?
Any advice would be appreciated.
