I have not tried from dos but I know that Windows 9x can't do it either. There is probably some configuration changes that you can make on the server to fix it, but I am not sure.
Anything past 2003 uses a form of file shareing that is more highly secured than the original dos and windows 9x clients can handle. This is the same kind of security that stops some of the NAS devices from working with these newer systems. The feature is called SMB signing and I'm not sure if you can turn it off in 2008 as it has not been supported for so long. Here is the info for 2003 servers though which may still apply:

Hi, did anyone manage to get this working? I tried to disable SMB2 with some reg edits but it didnt seem to work.
Thanks
What are you using the boot disk for?
Maybe time to look at a different method i.e wds 7 wdslinux?
Ben
If you set up WDS and WDSLinux then you can boot anything including a ghost deployment image.
Just means you have an easy way to add drivers to your boot image using mdt 2010.
