Folder redirection working, but start menu items hidden?
Hi,
Our folder redirection is working (desktop etc.) but the start menu items are hidden! For example if we create "\\server\menu$\students\start menu\Programs\Startup\AdobeReader" then Adobe Reader loads when a user logs in, but if they go to "All Programs" they cannot see the Startup folder, or any other folder we create!
A further example; there was a Games folder, I then created a Games folder on the server and now it is hidden!
I've tried giving everyone full access (share and NTFS) on the menu$ share but that makes no difference.
Very strange... any suggestions? We are using Server 2008 and Windows 7.
Thanks

30th August 2011, 03:47 PM #2 This is comming up allot on here with W7, this should fix it:
Disbale (do not leave not configured) this policy and it should work
User Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Start Menu > Remove Users folders from the Start Menu.

I saw a similar suggestion that said to enable this. I've tried both enabling and disabling this setting (then run "gpupdate /force" and re-log in) and it makes no difference :\

What is the folder path specified in group policy?

Just tried a new user/profile with the same issue.
We have specified \\server\menu$\students\start menu\ in GP.
Thanks

My experience of this problem is that there are a few settings which need to be checked:
1. Ensure the GPO "User Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Start Menu > Remove Users folders from the Start Menu" is DISABLED or NOT CONFIGURED.
This is because when windows does redirection in Windows 7 it is redirecting the Users folder.
2. Ensure that the correct permissions are set on the share AND folders you are redirecting to. Students (generally) should only need Read permissions on the start menu, but also need "traverse folder" on all the folders between the share root (eg. \\server\menu$) and the start menu itself.
3. On the folder redirection policy ensure that on the advance settings you have NOT set "grant user exclusive rights" to the folder. This can cause windows to get itself in a mess if the user logging on only has Read permissions on the files!
I hope that helps.
