    I think around £200 per socket. I don't know whether MS Education pricing varies between schools, or if they're all the same.

    That's right, you licence per socket (ie physical processor).

    Edit: To clarify, a datacentre socket licence would allow you to run an unlimited number of virtual copies of Windows Server on that server. You'd purchase the number of licences for the number of processors in that server, dual processor server = 2 datacentre licenses.

    can u i buy datacenter? then put esx on the box and put unlimited vm's into esx???? one of the vm's being datacenter??

    As many as you like can be datacentre.
