Cabling in new extension not connected to server - confused software person!

    Hello all,

I'm helping out with the IT at my daughter's school while they look at new maintenance contracts. They have just had a new extension built, and the sockets that have been installed aren't able to speak to the server. They don't appear to be "live". I spoke to someone from the company (who rather worryingly described himself as not knowing much about computers!) and he said that they need to be "patched" at the end in the IT room.

I'm an IT bod but on the programming side so this hardware stuff is all new to me! I've been fiddling around with netstat on the server to see if I could identify a port that was clearly not live but I have no idea if I'm barking up the wrong tree.

    Any advice/thoughts very gratefully received!

You need to physically connect the patch panels to the switch(es) with patch cables

    Patch panel.

    Switch

    Patch cable

Nothing to do with the servers.

It may just work but that depends on the current config/setup of the network; if it's VLANed, are the new switches connected to the main [backbone] network.

The patch panels and switches will be located in a comms cupboard/room

Brilliant, thank you - the pictures are really helpful! I am a real novice at this. I'll go and have a rummage in the comms room in the morning and see if I can see anything like that.

Is there no incumbent support provider?

Hopefully it will be simple but if you put a cable in the wrong place then you could bring the whole network to it's knees.

Take a picture of what is in the comms room and post it up.

You should find each outlet has a naming convention ( numbers and numerals ) which should be identifiable on the patch panels in the coms/server room

No incumbent, I'm afraid. Thank you for the warning, I will not do anything in haste - a photo will be on its way

Found the hardware thanks to j17sparky's pictures - nothing labelled - I ran the D-Link control panel so I can see which MAC address is tied to which port but it doesn't help me with the current problem - so I have called in some network specialists. Many thanks for your help
