Adding Desktop icons via Group Policy

    Hi,

I have Server 2008 r2 with Windows XP clients.

I have group policy open infront of me. The student profiles have a .man profile so nothing is saved back to the server.

When students login it logins with the .man profile and Word, Excel and My Computer, BUT it is loading the desktop icons stored in the all users on the local pc to the desktop too.

How can I set it, so just has Word, Excel and My Computer?

We redirect Students, Staff (and even my desktop, for my RDC icons etc) to their own separate folders on the server. Then we can drag and drop icons in and out. You'll have to disable a couple of icons within group policy to hide the recycle bin etc, but otherwise it's very straightforward.

That sounds good, how do you do that?

    Which options in GP?

I've found that option, and enabled Desktop, "Basic redirect everyones folder to the same location" and then placed \\server1\desktop.login underneath.

Set "Remove common program groups from start menu " back to not configured.

But it doesnt load the test icons I've placed in that location...?

I might be wrong but you might also need a folder called Desktop inside the share and in there you put your shortcuts. We don't redirect using GPO, instead we hack the mandatory profile directly.

@ben604 many thanks for posting the image, I now have the profile loading the folder redirected icons. But it's still loading the common files from allusers.
