I have an R1 box and I want to migrate AD to the R2 box. I understand I need to run adprep, however it is not on my installation media. I'm getting another disc shortly, but my question is this:
Migrating R1 - R2, do you really need to run adprep? Also, to complicate matters, the R1 box is 32bit and the R2 is 64bit. Will this have any effect?

You do need to do and adprep yes.
You will need to wipe the old box and install R2 from a fresh. You cant do an inplace upgrade from x86 to x64
How many DC's do you have?
2, it's just a primary school, gonna try and do the migration over the next couple of days. I'll be sticking VMware on the older box :-) I guess I'll have to wait for my other 2008 disc to arrive :-)
If you do the ad perep etc then move the roles to the otherserver, setup the R2 box and move the roles back that woul be the way to go.
