Shares Help needed ASAP
Hoping that someone can help me with what i am doing wrong. I am trying to allocate shares using GPO for our staff i have done this before with no issues but for some reason it doesnt seem to be working anymore from i have changed from server 2008 to 2008r2. I have added the folders and shared they by right clicking and properties and advanced sharing, I have double checked under server roles to make sure these shares are available and copied the location \\server\sharename then gone into GPO and created a new policy for Shares. I have now added each share a drive letter and copied the location in and also run gpupdate /force on both server and workstation but everytime i log in or restart and login no shares are available.
can anyone point me were i may have gone wrong please
Check the event viewer to see if there are error, most likely is a security permssions fault. The event viewer would say if this is the case!
thank you just double checked security permissions and they seem fine the correct accounts are set on the security of each folder then double checked both computer event viewer and server event viewer but didnt find any issues to do with the shares
You mention shares and drive letters, so I just want to clarify which part is failing. Are you saying that end users are not getting their mapped drives (or redirected documents) or that the shares don't exist when you check them?
So if you are on the client machine can you manually map a share using for example:
net use X: \\servername\sharename$
from an elevated command prompt.
If that works then the shares are fine and we need to start looking at your policies etc.
Can you map the shares using appropriate staff credentials when logged on as a local account?
Are you pushing the shares out using Group Policy Preferences? If not, how are you doing it?
And what are your clients running? XP, Vista, 7?
Thank you i will check and see if i can put the shares in using cmd the clients are all windows xp at the moment. when my users login they are not getting the shares available under my computer its just showing the c:\ and dvd drive but no shares are being mapped. I will try adding them on here manually to see if that works.
Would there be any reason or any issues when i was moving from 2008 to 2008r2 i built one server so that i could transfer policies over from old server to new one i have been through every poilicy to remove any reference to old server and made sure they had new server which is fine. but is it possible that in doing this its conflicting at all? I did demote the old server before removing but i just cant think why when i am doing the same as i always have it doesnt seem to work.
Ill post up shortly to let you know if adding using cmd worked ok.
Thanks again for your help with this.
it doesnt seem to be working if i open any window and type in the address bar \\servername\share it works if i open cmd and type net use Z:\\servername\share it says network name cannot be found
So, this works:

There should be a space between the Z: and \\, but I know that is probably just a typo here. So the line should be:
net use Z: \\servername\share
Can you just try that?
it seems if i create new shares it works fine
sorry no tried again with a different share and it stopped working
yes thatss right i can get to it from \\servername\share
but net use z: \\servername\share doesnt work for some reason
i am getting login failure but i have started cmd with admin rights
Just to double check you do not have a Z: mapped already???
try net use * \\servername\share and this will just use the last available drive letter.
Also I would try making a share on my local machine and then trying the net share.
Have you checked any possible firewall settings?
thank you for getting back to me to try these different things i have check firewall settings but nothing has been changed from when it was working all firewall settings are the same. I will check and mkae sure that i do not already have z drive mapped but i am almost certain i dont have. i will try as you have said using the net use *
i have tried the net use * \\servername\share but i keep getting Logon Failure: unknown username or bad password although i am logged in as myself with admin rights. I also tried running cmd as the domain administrator and get the same error message. Although when i open my computer and type in the address bar \\servername\share it works no problem
I have got a bit further when a user IE staff logs on and i open my computer and put in the address bar \\servername\share it works fine for them i have created shortcuts on the desktop but this only works once i would then need to go it on every computer
what permissions are on the share?
